Chris Pratt has signed to voice Garfield in Alcon Entertainment’s animated theatrical sequel to last year’s The Garfield Movie, based on the iconic comic strip Garfield with Sony Pictures distributing.

Producers are in talks with potential writers and directors and additional casting will be announced shortly. Mark Dindal directed The Garfield Movie, whose voice cast also included Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Winningham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Snoop Dogg and others.

The Garfield Movie was released in May 2024 and grossed more than $260 million worldwide. Sony Pictures distributed the animated film globally, excluding China.

Alcon acquired the rights from Jim Davis, the creator of the Garfield comic strip and brand, who will serve as an executive producer on the sequel with Bridget McMeel from Amuse.

John Cohen (The Garfield Movie, Despicable Me) and Steven P. Wegner will serve as producers along with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who announced Pratt’s signing Tuesday. Pratt also will serve in a producer role on the film.

Namit Malhotra’s production company Prime Focus Studios will co-produce the film alongside Alcon Entertainment, with Malhotra also serving as a producer. DNEG Animation is back onboard as animation partner, following the success of the studio’s work on the first movie.

Pratt recently starred in Walt Disney Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and voiced Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He stars next in the upcoming Mercy from Amazon MGM and Way of the Warrior Kid from Apple and Skydance.

Created by Davis, the Garfield comic strip debuted in June 1978 and follows the cynical and lazy orange cat and his interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and fellow pet Odie, the lovable dog.

Pratt is repped by UTA, Rise Management, and Sloane Offer Weber Dern. Jeannette Hill, EVP Business and Legal Affairs at Alcon Entertainment, negotiated the deal on the company’s behalf.
